About the Gait Lab

Innovative Technology in Motion Analysis

Innovative Technology in Motion Analysis

St. Xavier's Gait Lab, situated within the Xavier Institute of Engineering, Mumbai, represents a landmark achievement in the field of biomechanical research and pediatric care. Established through a pioneering collaboration between our institution and the renowned Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Engineering Center at Marquette University, USA, the lab is equipped with state-of-the-art motion capture systems and analytical tools.

Our Facility

Our Facility

Our lab is outfitted with the latest Qualisys motion capture technology, featuring 10 Miqus M3 cameras and 2 Miqus Video cameras. These high-speed cameras capture detailed three-dimensional images of a person's walk, allowing for precise analysis of gait and other related movements. This technology is complemented by sophisticated software that provides accurate data essential for diagnosing and treating locomotor abnormalities.

Cutting-Edge Research and Clinical Applications

Cutting-Edge Research and Clinical Applications

The Gait Lab is more than just a clinical assessment center; it is a hub for innovation and education. Here, engineering students and healthcare professionals come together to push the boundaries of what's possible in gait analysis and treatment. Our collaborative projects range from developing new methodologies for diagnosing complex gait abnormalities to designing custom orthotics and prosthetics that improve patient mobility.

Our Commitment to Quality Care

Our Commitment to Quality Care

At St. Xavier's Gait Lab, we are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children and adults with movement disorders. The lab not only provides comprehensive gait analysis but also interprets these findings to tailor rehabilitation strategies that are specific to each patient's needs. Our goal is to ensure that every individual we serve achieves the highest possible level of function and independence.

A Community-Centric Approach

A Community-Centric Approach

As the only facility of its kind in India offering motion analysis at a subsidized cost, we are committed to making our services accessible to all. By providing advanced diagnostics and treatment planning at an affordable rate, we aim to bring world-class healthcare to the broader community, ensuring that no one is denied the care they need due to financial constraints

Services Offered

Gait Analysis Using 3D Motion Capture

Gait Analysis Using 3D Motion Capture

  • We use our advanced motion capture system to record precise movements as patients walk along a walkway. This technology captures thousands of frames per second, providing a detailed look at each phase of the gait cycle.
  • This service aids in detecting subtle abnormalities in the gait that might not be visible to the naked eye. It is crucial for planning surgeries, designing personalized rehabilitation programs, and monitoring progress over time.
Electromyography (EMG)

Electromyography (EMG)

  • EMG involves measuring the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles to assess muscle response during gait. This helps in understanding muscle coordination and function.
  • EMG is particularly useful in identifying neuromuscular disorders and customizing treatment plans that enhance muscle use and patient mobility.
Force Plate Analysis

Force Plate Analysis

  • Embedded in the floor of our lab, force plates measure the forces exerted by the feet during walking. This data is crucial for understanding how well a patient is balancing and distributing weight while walking.
  • The analysis helps in pinpointing issues with balance, alignment, and walking efficiency. It is instrumental in prescribing orthotic interventions and modifying physical therapy approaches.
Dynamic Pressure Mapping

Dynamic Pressure Mapping

  • Dynamic pressure mapping involves capturing the distribution of pressure across the foot during movement. This is achieved using pressure-sensitive mats and in-shoe sensors.
  • This service provides insights into foot function and plantar pressure points, critical for designing supportive footwear and preventing injury.
Clinical Consultation and Treatment Planning

Clinical Consultation and Treatment Planning

  • Our team of specialists uses the data gathered from various tests to develop a comprehensive treatment strategy. This includes recommendations for physical therapy, surgical considerations, and assistive device prescriptions.
  • Tailored treatment plans based on empirical data ensure targeted interventions that are more likely to result in improved outcomes.
Educational Workshops and Training

Educational Workshops and Training

  • St. Xavier's Gait Lab also conducts workshops for healthcare professionals and students. These sessions are designed to educate attendees on the latest techniques in motion analysis and treatment strategies.
  • These educational initiatives help disseminate valuable knowledge across the medical and academic communities, promoting better healthcare practices.
